Elizabeth May is an author, activist, and lawyer who has served as the leader of the Green Party of Canada from 2006 to 2020 and co-leader from 2022 to the present, and has been the Member of Parliament for Saanich-Gulf Islands since 2011. She also founded and served as the Executive Director of the Sierra Club Canada. Prior to that, as a senior policy advisor, May was deeply involved in the negotiation of the Montreal Protocol treaty to protect the ozone layer, and was instrumental in the creation of several national parks, including Gwaii Haanas (South Moresby).
Amongst many accolades, May was made an officer of the Order of Canada in 2005; was named by the United Nations as one of the leading women environmentalists worldwide; was recognised by fellow MPs as Parliamentarian of the Year 2012, and Hardest-Working MP in 2013. She is also the longest serving female leader of a Canadian federal party.
